Application Tips

We are pleased you are considering participating in the LSAMP program and hope you join in the program soon!

1. If you have not done so, please fill out the pre-application form at Summer/Fall 2017 Pre-application Form

2. How to choose a faculty mentor and meet with your potential mentor

Ask yourself the following questions at the beginning of the process of selecting an appropriate faculty mentor:

  • What kind of research do you want to work on?

You will find that the more specific you can be about what your interested research is, the more confident you will feel about approaching potential faculty mentors. Your potential faculty will ask you to talk about your research interest and explain why you have the interests that you do. It is a way for them to engage in some meaningful conversation with you.

  • Do you have a faculty member(s) in mind that would make an excellent mentor?

Maybe you have taken a class you really enjoyed and developed a relationship with the professor in your field whom you want to work with. This person would be an obvious option for a mentor professor. If you haven't already have potential mentors in mind, you can research the faculty members listed on the department's web site. All departments at BCC have a web site listing all faculty members and usually department web sites also list what areas of research they specialize in. You can also come to talk to our activity or faculty coordinator and we will help you find an appropriate faculty mentor.

3. Meet with an LSAMP Faculty or Staff coordinator

At this meeting, we will discuss your educational and career goals and we may help to find a mentor in the field of your interest if you do not have one. Note that this meeting is NOT an interview for selection --- we just want to get to know you and help you with the application.

4. Prepare for the Complete the application form by the deadline

You may want to prepare for the documents (usually copies of birth certificate or green card, transcript etc) needed for the application in advance -- make a checklist so that you have the docs well-organized. You need to ask your faculty mentor for the project title/abstract. Try to submit the application before the deadline --- do not wait for last minute. Each semester we will update the application form and the link/deadline will be posted on this website.

5. Follow up on the application status. Good luck on your application!
