Monday Dec 4: Dr. Rony Gouraige, When is a module projective? part I Abstract
Projective modules generalize free modules. The dual of the notion of a projective module is that of an injective module. Projective and injective modules are fundamental structures in the theory of rings and modules. It is thus of some interest to characterize when a module is either projective or injective. We shall be concerned specifically with the issue of when the vanishing of the Ext bi-functor may be used to establish if a module is projective. There are some open (at least to my knowledge) problems concerned with this issue, and there has been some recent progress on a related problem, which has turned out to be undecidable. I shall not assume any familiarity with projectives, injectives, or Ext, and shall present all the background required to understand the statements of the problems.
