Math placement tool

  • This form finds students' placement depending on their compass scores, courses taken, etc. If you want to do it by hand, or want to double-check,here is the Math Placement table.
  • Enter any information about the student. It is not necessary to fill all the fields.
  • You can select the student's major or not. If you do not, the placement depends on the student's math sequence, which you can find here.
  • In the text area below you will find the math placement and the information you entered, for verification. Please check that all the information is correct.

  • Enter the compass grades here. You can find them in OSSES under 'Student Skill Test/Transcript', or at the bottom of the e-advisement form. If a part was not taken, leave that box blank.
  • If exempt from M1, write x.
  • If exempt with 'Q' code, enter Q in the M1 box.  
  • For example, if student
    • Has 80% or higher in any of the Regents tests
    • Has completed the three-year regents course sequence Integrated Algebra/Geometry/Algebra 2 and Trigonometry,
    enter Q in the M1 box.
  • If no COMPASS scores, but student has taken the CMAT exam, click here:  



High School Courses: Sequential Math II (SMQII): MQ3 and MQ4 [10th grade math] or Math A.
Sequential Math III (SMQIII): MQ5 and MQ6 or Math B.
  • Enter high-school courses passed only if student got 80% or higher in the Regents examination(s) and has completed the three-year regents course sequence Integrated Algebra/Geometry/Algebra 2 and Trigonometry.
  • If COMPASS scores are available, please enter them even if student has high-school credit.
